In 1639, behind the walls of a secluded manor, twenty-one women give birth beneath the gaze of a vampire duke.

Only some of the children appear to be human. The rest are something new: Chimera, engineered to walk in daylight — the hours the Night Lords can never see. This is the origin of the boy they call Jack, and a dark, biological re-imagining of the vampire myth.
